Reading as a Community Affair

I am a private person; moments savored quietly on the train, fleeting treasures of beauty and simple humor may all occur without ever sharing with another human being. Reflections of a personal nature will likely remain in the closed pages of hand-written diaries, never to be read by another family member or stranger alike. But there is one area of life where I feel a distinct need arising, and that is in the realm of critical thinking. I can live in a world of my own fantasy where all thoughts are right thought. I can develop a world view that is entirely my own, and if I remain in that world, my safety and security net will remain as soft and thick as a brand new mattress, wrapping me in an eternal layer of comfort. And those thoughts, those opinions, those concepts will forever be contained, never given the opportunity to reach, grow and mature into deep complexity. How stunted a life that must be.
